GSUS Live Experience A Great Success

7th May 2019Mrs D Curtis

On Monday 29th April the GSUS Bus Live, a purpose-built classroom equipped with touch screen tablet computers, was on site all week to deliver Religious Education (RE).

The GSUS Bus Live enabled students in year 7-10 and year 12 to experience an interactive RE lesson.  Students were able to look at three different topics Fear, Rejection and Forgiveness through the eyes of teenagers today and situations we may face in our everyday lives.

All students thoroughly enjoyed their experience on the GSUS Bus and have said that they would recommend other schools to make the most of this resource in school.

Click on the links below for more information for the GSUS Live experience.

A number of Year 10 students’ have recently visited Oxford University and Cambridge University.

Both days were very informative and students’ found out a lot and it increased their knowledge about what is on offer in higher education and the benefits of getting such a qualification.

They represented the academy very well and were accompanied by Mr White on both trips, with Mrs Lowe going to Oxford and Miss Eddowes joining the group at Cambridge.

In Baking News!

1st May 2019Mrs D Curtis

On Wednesday 10 April, six pairs of students were in fierce competition for the title of St Edmund’s Year 8 Master Chef 2019!

Tension simmered as the competition, organised by Mr Abraham and Mr Deeming, got underway.  The rules were designed to mirror those of the popular TV competition “The Great British Bake Off” and were strictly adhered to.  All chefs had two hours, to not only prepare an Easter themed cake, but also to clean and tidy away all equipment used.

The pressure was on and the kitchen soon became a melting pot of excitement as each pair began mixing their culinary creations!  Teamwork was the name of the game as each team coordinated their efforts to achieve everything in the two-hour time limit. Not all was smooth sailing, however, but excellent teamwork and effective collaboration saved the day!   Mr Deeming said, “It was an absolute pleasure to see all of the representatives from all the forms plan, prepare, and bake some amazing creations. All the groups encountered several problems but the students managed to work through and overcome them.  It was a true reflection of what Technology is all about; creativity, planning, problem solving and of course, a range of practical skills. I am so proud of them all. Well done.”

The team of judges consisted of Mrs. Hazeldine, Principal of St Edmund’s Catholic Academy, as well as Mrs. Wilcox and Mrs. Letheren, Assistant Principals.  All the judges were very impressed and were very complimentary about the teamwork and effort that had gone into producing such creative cakes. Mr Abraham, Head of Year 8, said, “All pupils worked incredibly hard and surprised me with how good the cakes were that they made. Seeing year 8 pupils work so hard towards something, makes me proud to be their Head of Year.”

Congratulations to the winning team: Hannah and Oliver, 8NK.  In second place were Katie and Rose, 8JD and in joint third place were Leoni and Caroline, 8AK and Katie and Rose, 8JD.  Also, well done to our other competitors: Olivia and Karanveer, 8AJ, Maja and Shad, 8AA and Shani and Kaydn, 8LD.

Synod Catch Up

29th April 2019Mrs D Ferris

Pope Francis to the youth of today: ‘You matter and you are important’
In the last week of term, the Kenelm trust, Soli House team and visitors from America and Canada came to St Edmund’s to speak to students involved in Pope Francis’ Synod on youth. Last year our students had discussed what challenges and issues they face in today’s modern world as a child of faith. On this visit the team shared the Pope’s response to their questions and concerns in a new document ‘Christus Vivit’
The Pope highlighted the challenges that young people face offering this as a “letter from the father to his kids’. Pope Francis reminds us: ‘you matter and you are important, and the church think you are important’.
The students received feedback on the Pope’s message and the session finished with prayers and music.
