Sports Visit to Wolverhampton University

7th December 2017Mrs D Curtis

On Wednesday 6 December nineteen year 9 pupils, with Jess Banks and Will Tudor, from year 13, went on a trip to the University of Wolverhampton, Walsall Campus,  to see facilities available and broaden their knowledge of the sports industry and higher education courses.

The visit commenced with a tour of the whole campus, looking at the Sports Centre, Gymnasium, Judo Centre (where the British Judo team are based) and the Performance Hub.

Students then moved onto the Sports Science laboratories where Jess and Will were put through their paces in jump, balance and agility tests using the state of the art equipment. This was the most impressive part of the day, where a whole new world of careers and opportunities in sport were highlighted to students.

The day ended with one of the head coaches putting knowledge presented during the day into practice – starting with a few fun games and moving on to how to professionally teach attacking and defending decision making, via handball. Students really tapped into the knowledge of the head coach and improved their skills and decision making vastly in such a short period of time.

It is hoped that students take this knowledge into future lessons and into their examination courses (year 9 into GCSE PE and Jess and Will into higher education). All pupils represented the academy very well and the staff at the University were very complimentary. St Edmund’s were asked to visit again, either with the same group or with other students who need such fantastic experiences.

Staff Raise Over £1000 For Movember Foundation

30th November 2017Mrs D Curtis

Globally, the rate of suicide is alarmingly high, particularly in men. Too many men are ‘toughing it out’, keeping their feelings to themselves and struggling in silence. The Movember Foundation is aiming to reduce the rate of male suicide by 25% by 2030.

Mr Tolley, Mr Banks, Mr Lynch, Mr Vazquez and Mr Smith decided to grow facial hair throughout November to generate funds for the Movember Foundation.

Mr Tolley said, “I can say we have been truly overwhelmed by the generosity of staff and even pupils who have joined in and donated and can say, after putting on the cash donations we have received, we will have raised over £1000 for Movember.  This is amazing as we started off with a target of just £250 and we have smashed it!

There is still time to contribute.  Please use the link https://moteam.co/hu-mo-nities

Well done guys.

30th November 2017Mrs D Curtis
The Year 7 and Year 8 basketball players participated in the Wolverhampton Schools 3v3 competition on Wednesday 29th November at St Peter’s. Sean Cadiz, Gjovani Cinari, Adriel Samiento, Eimantas Simiatis, Mohammed Ali, Shadi Ali, Roy Aneke, Harold Wilcox, Lamic Haile and Lukas Lopetaitis all did a great job representing the Academy.
Each team of three players competed against four other schools to see if they could progress into the next round. Even though they didn’t progress to the next round, there was some very good basketball and numerous points scored.
Mr Selvey said, “Adriel Samiento was the standout player from St Edmund’s. Well done to him and all the players above”.

Year 13 Chemists Visit University of Wolverhampton

28th November 2017Mrs D Curtis

On Wednesday 22nd November, the Year 13 Chemistry class had an amazing experience at the University of Wolverhampton. The activities of the day incorporated many of the skills needed to succeed at A-Level Chemistry.

The first session started with an experiment involving the use of activated carbon to purify water using specialised equipment. In the second practical, we used potatoes to generate electricity to light up LEDs, we then took this further to look at electrochemical cells. It ended with several interesting lectures regarding drug discovery and cancer.

We were impressed by the selection of food provided by the university and thoroughly enjoyed the day!

On Friday 24 November St Edmund’s took part in the nationwide Unison Stars in Our Schools event to celebrate the wonderful work support staff do every day.

Members of the Senior Leadership Team and Governing Body served tea and cake to support staff to say thank you for all they do in helping St Edmund’s students reach their full potential.

Mrs Hughes, Principal, thanked each and every member for rising to the challenges they face every day and emphasised the vital role they play in education.

Mrs Gallagher, Chair of the Academy Committee, said, “I think the event was very well received and what beautiful cakes!  The timing of the support staff “Stars in Our School” was very timely as we’re going to need everyone’s support to ensure the success of Mission Week.  I’m sure it will be another great week for everyone”.

Special thanks to members of the Catering Team for helping to organise the event and a massive thank you to Sam Hamilton who made the beautiful cakes.

As I write this notice, we have 3days 12hours, 25mins and 42 seconds left until St Edmund’s Catholic Academy embark on their first ‘Mission Week’. All staff and students will have an opportunity during the week to encounter God in different ways. Our theme for the week is ’Make your Mark’. On the last World youth Day Pope Francis asked us all to get off our sofa’s and ‘Make a Mark’ on the world.

Who has made a Mark on your Life? How can you be more like then?

Some of our students at our Soli retreat wrote our Mission Prayer, please keep us all in your thoughts and prayers over the next week. I am sure this will be an amazing week for all and we will be blessed with the Love and Joy of our Lord

Remembrance Day

23rd November 2017Mrs D Ferris

On Friday 10 November 2017 our annual whole school remembrance assembly was held. Mr Lloyd set the tone at the start of the assembly by playing ‘The Last Post’ on his trombone. The theme of this years assembly was ‘Remembering: Then and Now’.

Guided by Mrs Hazeldine and the visual images, the students and staff were very reflective throughout. It was fantastic to see participation from our Year 11 and 13 students who delivered readings, war poetry and a contemporary dance to Flanders Fields.

May I take this further opportunity to pay respect to all of the British Service men, women and their families who sacrifice for our freedom. ‘Lest We Forget’
