As part of the celebrations for Armed Forces Day on Saturday 24th June 2017, Wolverhampton City Council will be running a competition for primary and secondary school pupils. On Tuesday 7th March the Library Assistants had the opportunity to meet British children’s author Katherine Woodfine, known for The Sinclair’s Mysteries, at Wolverhampton Grammar School.

Students were given the opportunity to purchase a book, signed by Katherine, and to find out what inspired her to write her book The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow and hear more about the characters within and Sinclair’s Department Store.

Students also took part in a workshop where the children had to solve the mystery of the stolen painting.

Rajbir Singh in 8KB said, “I would give this trip 10/10. The trip taught me about where authors get their inspiration to write their stories. This was an opportunity to meet the talented Katherine Woodfine. This trip has also got me interested in reading mystery novels. I thought the best part was when we got to solve the Mystery of the Missing Masterpiece.

Bethany Bloomfield in 8JI said, “I loved the trip and had a fantastic afternoon. We solved a mystery and got some interesting answers to our questions. The best day ever we should go again next year.

On Tuesday 7th March, 12BC organised a charity Tug of War, between sixth formers and staff, to raise money for our Lenten charities.

First up was the sixth former boys’ vs the male staff, after a tense round, the male staff won. 

Next up were the girls, and the female staff won, leaving the staff to compete against each other. However, a last minute change was made and EVERYONE took part, all the girls vs all the boys, and the girls won.

It was a great event that raised just over £51 for charity, with the great atmosphere, everyone had a great time listening to the music and watching the tug of war take place.

12AB led a BINGO session during both lunches on Monday 6th March to raise money for the Lent charities.  Special thanks to our very entertaining BINGO callers; Farai, Martial, Meghan and Shaan, to Sabrina and Shannon who kept a record of the numbers called so students could track them off the board and to Eve for introducing both sessions.  The rest of 12AB were involved in selling tickets, giving out pens and encouraging students to take part.  A fantastic team effort!

National Science Week, the annual celebration of Science and Technology that takes place each year in March.

To mark this occasion we have lots of exciting activities taking place not only in Science lessons but in Tutor time too – so everyone can get involved!  Activities include an Entertainment based Science quiz, a fun poster competition for years 7-9, a fun filled Year 7 Science club on Wednesday 15^th March.

We look forward to sharing the excitement of Science and discovery with you!

On Wednesday 1^st March the whole school came together to start our Lent journey with our Ash Wednesday Liturgy. At the beginning of the Liturgy, Mrs Hughes, Principal, spoke to the community about how important the day is, marking the start of a period of 40 days preparing for the joyful resurrection of Easter. She reminded us about the three things we can do during Lent, Praying, Fasting and Giving.

During the Liturgy Fr Mark blessed the palm leaf ash and marked out foreheads to remind us that we are created by God.

‘Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return’

In the book of Genesis, Adam was created from dust, this reminds and shows us of our human weaknesses and to receive the ashes with humility.

Today is World Book Day.  We’ve been working hard in the Library to get the Scholastic Teen Book Club leaflets distributed to students’ to mark World Book Day. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to order a book from the leaflet using the World Book Day token and with a saving £1 on all purchases.

All orders need to be brought to Mrs Lowe in the Library in an envelope with the correct money no later than 13th March 2017. You can also order online at www.scholastic.co.uk/clubs. Your books will be delivered to the Academy as normal.
