25th October 2016Mrs D Curtis

Jack Leighton, a pupil at St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School, recently attended our Open Evening and won himself £50 worth of Lads and Lasses school wear vouchers.

Mrs Hughes, our Principal, presented Jack with his prize. She was delighted to hear that Jack really enjoyed taking part in the sport’s activities during Open Evening.

Well done Jack.

Book of the Week: A Hat Full of Sky

18th October 2016Mrs D Curtis

Eleven-year-old Tiffany Aching wants to be a real witch. But a real witch doesn’t casually step out of her body, leaving it empty. Tiffany does – and there’s something just waiting for a handy body to take over. Something ancient and horrible which can’t die. Now Tiffany’s got to learn to be a real witch, really quickly, with the help of arch witch Mistress Weatherwax and the truly amazing Miss Level. Oh, yes. And the Nac Mac Feegle – the rowdiest, toughest, smelliest bunch of fairies ever to be thrown out of Fairyland for being drunk at two in the afternoon. They’ll fight anything.

Lightfever: Say a Prayer and Spend Time With Our Lord

13th October 2016Mrs D Curtis

Lightfever is a time for students and staff to come into the Academy Chapel and take time out to light a candle, say a prayer and spend a few minutes with our Lord.

The Chapel is filled with as many candles as possible to give a relaxed and peaceful setting whilst instrumental music is played in the background.

Lightfever takes place the last Thursday of every month and the whole of the school community are welcome to attend.

Lewis Sprinthorpe from Year 7 came for the first time in September and, following  his Lightfever experience, sent Mrs Ferris this email:

Why I recommend LIGHTFEVER

By: Lewis Springthorpe, Year 7

Lightfever is all I needed to de-stress over lunchtime. De-stress from all the hustle, bustle and lessons, and chill.

I spent a few minutes in the chapel, lit a candle and prayed.

The music, the candles flickering and swaying, it was all I needed to unwind and be with the Lord.

Being on the last Thursday of each month means it isn’t often, but when it’s going on, it’s refreshing, for sure.

After spending time with the Lord in the Chapel with the candles and music, you leave and are given a sweet, after spending time in the Chapel.

No matter what religion you are, I recommend Lightfever as the candles and music are calming, letting you say prayers from your own religion.

I plan to come back to Lightfever every last Thursday of the month and I hope this will make you have a visit too.

A Wonderful Open Evening

6th October 2016Mrs D Curtis

St Edmund’s opened its doors to visitors and prospective students to a taste of the St Edmund’s learning environment and to see the caring and nurturing Catholic atmosphere we share.  Our classrooms were bursting with lots of activities; there was so much for everyone to enjoy and there was even a treasure hunt for the children.

Many of our students were tour guides and many of our visitors commented on how knowledgeable, confident, polite and skillful they were.  They really did convey the best of the unity of our school and especially the Gospel values of service and love.

The winners of the Treasure Hunt were Rowan Ridley and Lauryn Bernard. They have each won a copy of the Guinness Book of Records Book.  Rowan, from Uplands Junior School said, “I didn’t realise this school was so amazing.  I can’t wait to come, I want to come now”.
If you missed our Open Evening and would like to visit, we are holding another Open Morning at 9.15 – 10.45 am on Wednesday 12th October.  We look forward to seeing you.
