Margaret and Barry Mizen Spread Forgiveness

29th March 2018Mrs D Curtis

In the middle of Holy Week St Edmund’s Catholic Academy has been blessed with the presence of Margaret and Barry Mizen to share their testimony of how their son Jimmy was killed on the 10 May 2008,  the day after his 16th Birthday, and the journey they have been on since,  which tells of love, hope, peace and forgiveness.

Their story was an emotional journey for students and staff. Margaret and Barry shared their experience of how anger, resentment and hurt, that takes over after death, can cause destruction to so many people if allowed.

Jimmy Mizen went into a bakery in London with his brother when a fight broke out.  The fight was instigated by someone known to the brothers, who they had had disagreements with previously.  Jimmy and his brother did not want to fight. However, a glass dish was thrown at Jimmy during the fight which  smashed and shards of glass severed Jimmy’s carotid artery and jugular vein.  He died in the arms of one of his brothers.

Barry Mizen tells of how they have forgiven Jimmy’s killer because being resentful and angry doesn’t help anyone and doesn’t do anyone any good personally.  They know the killer had difficulties and events in his life that resulted in his anger. They asked why interventions hadn’t been put into place earlier in his life to help him.

Barry and Margaret have set up the Jimmy Foundation, which is now called ‘Just Jimmy’.   They travel around the country, visiting schools/prisons etc. to spread the message of love, of being valued and of forgiveness.  They hope that, by their actions, this will prevent other families becoming involved in similar circumstances.

Jimmy belonged to a normal family. He was one of nine children, who lived in London, was an Alter Server and a kind, generous and happy boy.  He went out one Saturday to buy his first Lottery Ticket and never returned home.

Margaret told us how Mary, Mother of Jesus,  is a great comfort to her and asked us to think of Mary on Good Friday.  Mary watched her son die on the cross and still cared and helped others.

Here is a prayer one of our students wrote after the Mizens visit:

Dear God,

Thank you for blessing us with the opportunity of hearing Jimmy’s story and enlightening us with forgiveness, peace and hope.  I haven’t been touched like this in a long time.  Mr and Mrs Mizen are incredibly strong and it was an honour to listen to their story.

I am very sorry for their loss and their willpower to continue is desirable. Their encounter is so incredible and for them to share their story is heart-warming. Their power to continue and to forgive is something I’d never have and could never do.

Every day I ask you to give them strength and to make sure they keep spreading their story.

Give everyone the strength to make the world a better place.

Thank You

Amen.

Year 12 visit to Keele University

27th March 2018Mr M Jones

On PD Day year 12 visited Keele University. An introduction to university life was given followed by a tour.

The campus provides a wealth of amenities including a gym, Multi Faith Chapel , bank and restaurants. The site is a hybrid of modern and more traditional buildings on 620 acres of land with eight lakes.

David Bedford Maths Lecturer gave an insight into infinite number patterns, so Mr Lloyd was in his element! Bartosz Walzak contributed answers and devised his own theorem stating, “the day was really useful and I can’t wait to go to university”.

The Business, Finance & Accounting lecture focused on risks and probabilities and touched upon the effects of Brexit.

The Psychology talk was based on the Harry Potter stories. Dr Yvonne Skipper gave a most amusing talk on how prejudices were demonstrated through the houses in Harry Potter!

The History lecture gave an insight into communication through the ages with the current issue of “fake news” explained. The use of traditional postcards versus the now common instant messaging we were explored.

The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Think Tank-Synod

20th March 2018Mrs D Ferris

Think Tank for Pope Francis
By John Smith 12BH

Last week, a handful of pupils from each year were gathered to take part in a global questionnaire for the youth of the world, in preparation for the Synod of Pope Francis. Asked a set of questions about their identity, beliefs and ideas about prejudice and assisted by familiar faces from last year’s Mission Week, the views and ideas of St Edmund’s students will be gathered along with the answers of schools from across the world, ready to be presented to the Pope in time for his conference with the world’s bishops and priests, all in an effort to help the youth of the world.

Think Tank by Alishya Jose 10RH

The Synod Think Tank took place on the 15th March. Both the BCYS AND Soli Team (Vicki, John, David, Cameron and Janaya) came into school. They met with 30 pupils from KS3, KS4 and Sixth Form and I was one of the pupils involved.
At the beginning they encouraged us to play a game to get us active. Vicki gave us a subject to discuss. She has 3 key focuses: Beauty, Truth and Goodness. Based on that, David shared an experience of his pilgrimage walk to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. After he shared his experience, we were asked to close our eyes and think of the moments we saw or heard of something that was beautiful. He said even the simplest moments, like having a cake on a rainy day, is special.
Janaya sang the song that she and her band composed and the verses were profound, it touched me somewhere inside. After she sang, she shared her experience of seeing the Northern Lights in her town where she lives in Canada and she said she would never get enough of seeing them.
After this we split into groups to discuss the questions we had been given. Me and my friends were in Cameron’s group and we were all confident in answering the questions since the leader was friendly. A portion of the inquiry that we were given was very thought provoking that it makes you doubt your convictions, life and future. There were 20 questions and two of them was what is important to you in life? What do you want to be as a person? The experiences of the two group leaders encouraged me to ponder that the littlest thing can be admirable in your life. In the group discussion, the talk was profound and I got the chance to encounter a new point of view.
My companions, my friends and I were astonished at the fact that Pope Francis actually wants to hear real, honest answers to the questions he asked. We never lied. Regardless of whether or not it was impolite, we were advised to state the truth. That gives us the motivation that even one individual can have an effect on the world. I hope that there are further Synod meeting in school since many people, including me, loved hearing and giving opinions and it felt like Pope Francis was there when we were making our points.

Surprise party for Site Officer

14th March 2018Mrs D Curtis

John Roberts was taken by surprise on Friday evening!!!  John’s partner, Apple and staff at St Edmund’s Catholic Academy decided to organise a Birthday Party for him, without his knowledge, to celebrate his 60th Birthday, and also to mark the fact that he has given almost 21 years of service to the former school, which converted to academy status four years ago.    Preparations had been underway well in advance, with gifts, music, food and a cake organised for him.  On arrival John was met with the sound of huge party poppers, music and a welcome from some 50 former employees, all anxious to congratulate and make a fuss of him!!!!

John commenced his employment  in June 1997, and became the Caretaker/Site Manager at the former school in 2004.  He worked for many years doing a ‘split shift’, supervising evening events at the school and ensuring that all was safe and secure at all times.    John is in his 21st year of employment with what is now St Edmund’s Catholic Academy – part of Bishop Clearly Multi Academy Company.  Celebrations were to continue with a family party on Saturday.

Principal Maggie Hughes commented ‘ John has given 21 years service to St Edmund’s and it was a great pleasure to assist in the subterfuge to keep his birthday celebration a secret’.
