Aspiring Medic Sixth Form Visit

20th March 2017Mrs D Curtis

On Monday 20th March Zoe Johnson, who is currently in her third year at Cardiff University studying Medicine, came to talk to our students on the Excellence Programme in Year 11 and 12.

Zoe gave students an insight into what life is like as a medical student, as well as advice on applying to university, personal statement writing and gaining work experience. Students left with a better understanding of what was required of them to study Medicine and other pathways they could take in this career field.

Students enjoyed the presentation and individuals were able to speak to Zoe afterwards about their career pathways and were given advice. Year 12 student Magdalena Kot said, “It was very eye opening to what medicine requires from you and it is very useful for anyone who wants to go down that route”.

We would like to wish Zoe good luck with her studies and thank her for taking time to share her career with us, it was a great experience and has inspired many students!

12HM Coin Mile Challenge

17th March 2017Mrs D Curtis

On Friday the 10th of March, 12HM attempted to create a Mile of Coins on the tennis court. Preparation for this event lasted whole week, starting on the Monday, when everyone gathered together to make a plan and volunteers each received a task that they had to complete. After students had measured the tennis court and diameter of the biggest coin (2 pence) they  calculated that, in total, there were 64,000 coins needed in order to complete the  given challenge.

On the Tuesday the collection began and the coins started to roll in. Students walked around the academy with their buckets, collecting coins from both students and staff.

On the last day of the collection, 12HM gave one last push and walked around the academy collecting any additional change that they could get.

PIC02

Friday morning arrived and it was time to walk out and lay all the coins down on the tennis court. Music played as the challenge continued.  Whilst the mile length was not quite reached, students were happy to see that they had raised a total of £80.46 towards our Lenten charities.  Students were very happy to have raised money that would help others.

Well done to everyone involved. Another challenge success.

Last week St Edmund’s Catholic Academy and S. Peter’s Collegiate School presented a wonderful production of We Will Rock You.  The students from both schools worked so hard and did phenomenally well performing to four sell-out audiences (even managing to stay awake in their lessons during the day!!)  Staff, students , parents and guests from each of the schools were able to experience a wonderful evening. Special thanks to all members of staff and students at both schools who were involved working front of house or backstage to make this a great success.

Library Assistants Meet Famous Children’s Author

13th March 2017Mrs D Curtis

On Tuesday 7th March the Library Assistants had the opportunity to meet British children’s author Katherine Woodfine, known for The Sinclair’s Mysteries, at Wolverhampton Grammar School.

Students were given the opportunity to purchase a book, signed by Katherine, and to find out what inspired her to write her book The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow and hear more about the characters within and Sinclair’s Department Store.

Students also took part in a workshop where the children had to solve the mystery of the stolen painting.

Rajbir Singh in 8KB said, “I would give this trip 10/10. The trip taught me about where authors get their inspiration to write their stories. This was an opportunity to meet the talented Katherine Woodfine. This trip has also got me interested in reading mystery novels. I thought the best part was when we got to solve the Mystery of the Missing Masterpiece.

Bethany Bloomfield in 8JI said, “I loved the trip and had a fantastic afternoon. We solved a mystery and got some interesting answers to our questions. The best day ever we should go again next year.

Katherine Woodfine can be seen pictured here with Sherroze Din, Emily Round, Sylwia Lagowska, Bethany Bloomfield, Haniya Deen, Molly Kerin, Paige Gostick, Stacey Pearce, Rajbir Singh, Evelyn Thorpe,  Neeta Mahey and Alexia Taylor.
